Skills are inherently different from an abilities and spells. While an ability is something anyone could learn, given time and practice with said ability, skills are usually natural and supernatural traits that one is either born with immediately, or born with the potential to gain later. All skill trees have a Base Ability, which establishes the overarching theme of their skill. It should be noted that there is a noticeable power curve in terms of skill trees.
After the Base Ability is determined, the user has five skill tree slots to accommodate their Tier One Skills. These are typically equal in power to the players typical abilities, however, they are also somewhat specialized, but can be almost anything, from summoning weapons, as noted by the members of Organization Thirteen, each of which are capable of summoning their weapon, to levitating weaponry, as seen by Xaldin, a wind based combatant, to even manipulating a element directly, as seen by Xemnas, an extremely adept manipulator of Nothingness. These five skills, and every skill onward, are allowed to be different from the basic ability, but it is highly recommended to find some way to tie it in to the base ability, in order to create a Overarching theme.
After the Tier One Skills, the user unlocks their four Tier Two Skills, some of which expand upon other skills, as shown by Axel, who used his own basic ability, henceforth known as "Tears of Flame", which allowed him basic control over fire, to coat his Chakrams in flame, giving him a more powerful attack. However, more often than not, they give new abilities, as shown by Xigbar's use of his Spacial Magic to walk on Ceilings. After your Tier Two Skills are unlocked and mastered, next come the three Tier Three Skills, which tend to be the inverse of the Tier Two skills, tending to add more onto your Base Ability and Tier Two Skills, as Shown by Xaldin, who is able to use his power over wind to interlock his lances in various shapes, from Shields, to chains, to even a full sized dragon! Or, as seen by Xemnas, who used his Nothingness magic to launch his weapon, the Ethereal Blade, at an opponent, or catch them in a cage of Ethereal Blades, which would then be launched at them in quick succession.
After the Tier Three Skills are unlocked and Mastered, next come your two Tier Four Skills. These, without exception, tend to be enhancements of previous skills, or more powerful versions of your Base Ability. Good examples of this level of skill would be Axel's ability to create a ring of fire to lock an opponent into an area, and then proceed to turn the floor into a magma looking substance, flames licking up from charred areas. Or Xaldin's ability to create extremely strong winds, to knock opponents back. After these skills are learned and mastered, you gain access to your Tier Five Skill. This is a single, almighty skill. An example of this would be Xemnas's aforementioned caging ability, or Ansem, Seeker of Darkness's ability to transform into the being known as World of Chaos. This singular skill can be literally anything, but tends to fall under the same overarching theme of the base ability.
The skill tree topic may be set in any format, but keep in mind: At the highest level, without a keyblade or a drive form, a somebody only has two skill trees, whereas a nobody with the same abilities has three. The highest number any character is ever capable of wielding is five skill trees: one from their original creation, one from hitting tier four, one for their Keyblade/Synchblade, one that defines their Drive Forms, and one other is freely awarded to Nobodies. These five can obviously be done in any way, but the maximum number of skill trees is five.

Ability based skill trees are the foundation for character specific abilities and applications. They are generally designed around a theme related to the character . Skills and Skill Trees are treated differently from other common spells and skills, as they are most usually supernatural or natural in nature. As a character grows in power so too does their skill tree, each new Tier reached unlocking a new set of skills to utilize. The most effective Skill Trees have a base ability which clearly displays the overall theme, and skills that amplify that base ability.

Keyblade skill trees are oriented around a set of abilities that can be performed at the command of the wielder. These again, much like basic skill trees, are based upon a theme. The theme accurately represented both in the design and origin of the keyblade as well as the actions it is capable of doing. Skill Trees linked to a keyblade will always have a set of general abilities that are common to each one of it’s weapon kind. These include, Chosen, Summoning, Lock / Unlock as well as several form transformations. These are spread through the power tiers for sake of balance and growth.

Drive Form skill trees are sets of abilities that define specific Drive Forms and their inherent capabilities. Each Drive Form can provide several benefits as well as a major drawback upon activation. They also provide specific abilities based upon the focus of the form. As a pair of examples: a power oriented form may have devastating physical attacks, as a magic oriented form my provide a boost to spells depending on the nature of the caster. Drive Forms can only be activated by a designated item they are linked to. This item, known as a Drive Focus, is indestructible (though it can be lost, stolen, and misplaced).

World Chosen skill trees are a set of abilities progressively granted unto the Chosen of a world throughout their run. These range from permissions to access certain things to amplifications of specific stats or even special spells or skills that can be used while in the world. All abilities within a World Chosen skill tree must be based around the theme of the world it represents. More abilities can be accessed over time as a world develops and moves forward, which means that this tree is not tied to character tier but to the activity generated within the world.
Base Ability: The ability tied to the world you run. This tree must relate to the world you are the chosen by.
